The still life consists of ingredients to make a tomato sauce. I thought about the technique of Van Gogh and started with a pencil sketch (though a very loose sketch) to get the position, size and perspective of the objects. I also thought I would use pen and ink and make marks such as lines and dots, like Van Gogh. Although during the process of doing the drawing I think I rather lost sight of this initial aim. I found it difficult to be precise with lines and the elipse on the top of my tomato can went very wrong as did its shape in general and the writing on it! I generally used lines where I saw them and dots for shading. Though done rather quickly at the end, I think the attempt to give impression of the wooden chopping board was effective and I think the less precise shading I did between the can and Basil pot looks better than it does in other areas. I think the looser my drawing technique, the easier I will find it to draw such a subject. I also think it does really help to add the background of the worktop and curtain to the side.
